Combining Contour and Region Information for Perceptual Grouping

چکیده
Both contour and region segmentation have their own advantages and drawbacks. In this work we propose to combine contour approximation and contour-based groupings with region segmentation to enhance both contour-and region-based interpretation of the image data. Contour segments and regions are matched based on the distance between contours and region boundary. This information is used to hy-pothesise alternative regions and to generate additional closed contours within the contour-based grouping process. Initial results for real images are presented.

Combining local belief from low-level primitives for perceptual grouping
Segmentation is usually unable to cope with artifacts due to slight change in lighting conditions or object occlusion for instance. That is why perceptual grouping is often used to overcome segmentation’s lacks. This refers to the ability of human visual system to impose structure and regularity over signal-based data. Gestalt psychologists have exhibited some properties which are used during p...
متن کاملPerceptual Grouping Using Markov Random Fields and Cue Integration of Contour and Region Information
A common feature of computer vision systems is the use of levels of increasing abstraction to represent intermediate results and thus successively bridging the gap between raw image data and the nal result. To elaborate on such a hierarchical representation we propose a contour-based grouping hierarchy based on principles of perceptual organization. Exploiting regularities in the image, we aim ...

A number of leading theories (e.g., Grossberg & Mingolla, 1985; Kellman & Shipley, 1991; Rensink & Enns, 1995) commonly assume that perceptual grouping by contour alignment occurs preattentively across reversing contrast polarity elements. We examined this notion in seven visual search experiments. We found that only grouping by attachment supported preattentive visual search and that grouping ...

Man-made object recognition from remotely sensed imagery is not only scientifically challenging but also of significant practical importance for spatial data acquisition and update of geographic information system databases, mapping, cartography, image interpretation, military activities and other applications, etc. In the literature, a large amount of work that has been done in the field of hi...
